Glacier itinerary scene

5-day / 4-night itinerary

5 days in Glacier, with room beyond Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Use arrival and departure days lightly, give Going-to-the-Sun Road the best full day, and keep one flexible block for weather, transfers, or a second part of Glacier.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

This west-side itinerary pairs Apgar and Lake McDonald with one conditional Going-to-the-Sun Road crossing and one short departure-day stop.

Best length

5 days / 4 nights

One arrival day, 3 full days, and a realistic departure day.

Stay

Under Canvas Glacier

Seasonal safari-style tents with private bathrooms and an on-site restaurant in Coram. Choose it for…

Main activity

Going-to-the-Sun Road

Use Going-to-the-Sun Road as the first full-day anchor, then give each added day a distinct area or purpose.

Pace

One west-side stay

Apgar, Lake McDonald, and the west entrance remain close; St. Mary, Babb, and Many Glacier do not belong in the evening meal plan.

Boardwalk through the cedar forest along Trail of the Cedars
Trail of the Cedars is the shorter west-side woodland walk near Avalanche Creek.
Illustrated view of Wild Goose Island and mountain peaks above St. Mary Lake
St. Mary Lake opens the broad east-side half of Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Bowman Lake shoreline and mountains in Glacier's North Fork
Bowman Lake is a separate North Fork day reached by long, partly unpaved roads.

Arrival

Apgar, Lake McDonald, and a west-side dinner

Check in near West Glacier or Columbia Falls, walk the Apgar lakeshore, and eat west of the park rather than crossing to St. Mary.

4:00 PM

Day 2

Cross Going-to-the-Sun Road

Give Going-to-the-Sun Road the strongest daylight window, then keep the remaining stops in the same area or along the natural return route.

5:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to the west-side lodging

The westbound return is part of the day. If fatigue, smoke, or weather makes a second crossing unwise, use the outside-the-park route or adjust the route before leaving St. Mary.

Bookable Experiences

Day 3

Give another Glacier corridor its own day.

Choose Many Glacier, Two Medicine, the North Fork, or another reachable district rather than repeating the west-side loop.

5:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to the west-side lodging

The westbound return is part of the day. If fatigue, smoke, or weather makes a second crossing unwise, use the outside-the-park route or adjust the route before leaving St. Mary.

Bookable Experiences

Day 4

Protect a weather-and-road flex day.

Clouds, smoke, road work, and alpine access can move the most important Glacier day.

5:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to the west-side lodging

The westbound return is part of the day. If fatigue, smoke, or weather makes a second crossing unwise, use the outside-the-park route or adjust the route before leaving St. Mary.

Departure

Protect checkout, luggage, and the trip home.

Use the final morning for one nearby stop only when it fits the transportation window without gambling the departure.
