Walk the cedar forest at Avalanche, cross alpine tundra at Logan Pass, or give Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and the North Fork their own day.
Avalanche begins in western cedar forest, Logan Pass opens onto alpine tundra, and Many Glacier and Two Medicine occupy separate east-side valleys. The North Fork and Middle Fork add rougher roads or a river day beyond the main park corridor.
West side · cedar forest and lake
Apgar, Lake McDonald Lodge, Trail of the Cedars, and Avalanche Lake form the park’s most accessible west-side sequence. Avalanche is a full hike; Trail of the Cedars is the shorter boardwalk choice.

Alpine · parking and shuttle limits
The visitor center and Hidden Lake Overlook open onto tundra, mountain-goat habitat, snowfields, and broad views across the Continental Divide. Trail closures and lingering snow can change the walk.

East side · lakes and longer trails
Swiftcurrent Lake, Lake Josephine, Grinnell Glacier, and wildlife-rich slopes justify a separate day. The valley is not a quick add-on after a complete Sun Road crossing.

Southeast · lake, falls, and passes
Two Medicine offers boat access, Twin Falls, Upper Two Medicine Lake, and routes toward Dawson and Pitamakan passes. In 2026, construction blocks the North Shore trailhead; the signed reroute includes an unbridged ford, while South Shore access adds about one mile each way and avoids it.

Unpaved roads · remote lakes
Polebridge, Bowman Lake, and Kintla Lake occupy a quieter northwestern corner reached by long, partly unpaved roads. Fuel, food, and services are limited compared with the main west entrance corridor.

Gateway river or ranger context
Guided floats and whitewater trips leave from west-side gateway communities on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Inside the park, ranger walks, boat tours, and visitor-center programs add natural and cultural context without another long drive.

One west-side corridor
Apgar, Lake McDonald Lodge, and Trail of the Cedars follow the same western approach. Add Avalanche Lake only when it is the day’s primary hike; it requires much more time than the cedar boardwalk.
One complete Sun Road crossing
These stops share Going-to-the-Sun Road when the alpine section is open. A Hidden Lake walk plus selected east-side overlooks fits the corridor; Many Glacier does not sit on the same road.
Separate entrance near Babb
Swiftcurrent Lake, Lake Josephine, Grinnell-area trails, and wildlife viewing can fill the day. Reaching the valley requires leaving the Sun Road and following the Many Glacier approach from Babb.
Separate southeastern approach
The lake, boat service, Twin Falls, and longer pass trails form their own outing. The current North Shore construction detour makes this a poor add-on to a Sun Road crossing.
Long, partly unpaved access
Use the North Fork for Polebridge and one remote lake rather than as a shortcut between park highlights. Limited fuel, food, and road speed separate it from the Lake McDonald corridor.
Gateway river day
A half-day float can share a day with Apgar, a West Glacier meal, or another short west-side stop. A full-day river trip replaces a park-valley day instead of preceding a drive to St. Mary or Many Glacier.
